The Global Refugee Crisis
Introductions
As we all know, Syria is dealing with a "small" crisis. I say "small" because other countries have bigger issues to deal with like 3G not working or getting unfollowed on twitter or Instagram.
What do we do? Do we ever do anything? Nothing! We see people forcefully flee their homes as it gets out of control on our TV screens. Yet what do we do? Nothing. We move on and pretend it's not happening.
We didn't pay any attention to it before so why now? Well, I ask the same thing. Meanwhile, others do their best to make refugees feel accepted by welcoming them in their homes and some even adopt children. But that's not enough as there are still millions of refugees out there who still haven't received any help. However, the help is very much appreciated for those who have received help.
The refugee crisis has been going on for longer but many of us only became aware of it since millions started coming to Europe. Now, if you were a refugee, how would you feel if you're being described as a number when you're human too. Why wasn't this considered as a crisis until millions stared coming to Europe. Again, I ask the same thing.
Well if you were a refugee, how would you feel being described as a number when you're human too. here's a story from a refugee:
I've always wanted to be a lawyer, I want to be a voice for they that have none. However when i got the chance, I had to put my life on hold and so did many others.Well if you were a refugee, how would you feel being described as a number when you're human too. here's a story from a refugee:
A Life On Hold- Amal's Story.
We finally did as we strived to make it to the border. The never-ending journey had finally ended, well so I thought. Crossing a sea, we could go days without food or shelter. I waited for so long to get in with no knowledge of the number of interrogations and police stations we had to go through before being allowed to stay. What would you do when you realise your arrival haunts every decision maker, when everything you do is seen as strange, foreign and unfamiliar and all you want is just a peaceful place to live.
Struggling to get a good night sleep as the excruciation memory haunts me again. Seeing her killed and not being able to do anything to help her. If she was here, she would be able to explain everything that's going on and get me through this. It's hard enough not knowing everything that's going on and having to explain to your siblings. But they're not old enough to understand yet they ask way too many questions.
As the hope of returning home slowly fades away, I struggle to fit in, mostly because of the language I speak. People have lost soo much already, their homes, families, education, jobs, life earnings and friends. Sadly, some even lost their lives from an issue that wasn't even started because of them or some have been separated from their families. Having to work and pay rent when most had houses of their own and companies.
Being here, we don't have our voices. No one here can speak their thoughts. Not even when the language is learnt. After all we're just refugees right? We have no rights, we feel restricted and we are unable to speak our minds.
They give me hope through all this, my siblings. I wish they did not have to go through this or even witness it and be victims. They should not be living like this. No one should. This will be the only childhood memory they will ever have. There is no fun in that, yet they manage to put a smile on mine and their faces.
Being stuck on a foreign land, with a foreign language and having to fit in.
We are disrespected but we were not always like this. We're also human. I still have my dream but I need to keep holding on to it until life is not interrupted by anything else. Until it's kind of back to normal. But hey, what normal anyway?
There is no where safe. It's difficult to go to school when you feel the dagger shooting out of people's eyes to the back of your neck and when you hear the whispers about you. But who said it was going to be easy. I still want to achieve my goal even though it's like living through hell right after surviving another.
I never thought I would be a victim- what do I know? Its not like it was an option. None of us want to be stuck on a foreign land just to be judged and criticised. I just want to be able to finally help people. After all, we are just ordinary people facing extraordinary struggles.
And that's my story.
Fleeing their homes is just the beginning of a long journey. Refugees have to learn new languages, fit in, get jobs, find homes, and find family they have been separated from. They try their best to put their lives back together. It's not easy for them. It gets harder and harder everyday just when they thought it will get easier. They must be terrified after having to witness murders and genocides.
Did you know that 1 in every 113 people in the world is now a refugee? That is a lot of people. Before many of us became aware of it, refugees were hosted in poorer countries like Turkey, Ethiopia and Mexico.
